Frequently Asked Questions about image uploads
If you have a question about uploading photos to The Production Village, please read these FAQs before emailing us.
1) What image format should I use?
The Production Village supports most common formats, including JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP and many others. When your photo is uploaded, we generate a variety of different sized versions of the photo for use in different templates around the site, and save these as JPEG format. Ideally, your photo should be no more than 2MB or 1600 x 1200 pixels in size when uploaded, since anything more will just take longer to upload.
2) How big should my image be?
We resize all images so that they are no bigger than 1024 (w) x 768 (h) pixels. We then create several smaller versions of the picture from these, and discard the original (probably larger) sized versions. So, it won't benefit you to upload anything bigger than this, although it is possible to upload up to a 5MB file - the extra information will just be discarded.
3) I have a flaky internet connection. Will my image upload OK?
When you upload a photo to The Production Village, you'll see a progress bar that will inform you how the upload is going. If this bar doesn't complete, or if you don't progress to the next page, then your upload hasn't been successful. You'll need to try again, since we can't resume partially-completed uploads.
4) My photo was taken by someone else. Can I still upload it?
Sure, so long as you obtain copyright permission. You will need to tick a box to verify that you have permission of the copyright owner to upload the picture. As an incentive to the photographer, we provide a place for you to enter the photographer's name, so that they can be credited.
